Summons have always been a mechanic that did massive damage for massive cost and in a modern Final Fantasy, it can be harder to fit such a concept in. Summons are once again massive behemoths rather than just incidental to the battle system, which tells me that either this game is making some of the same mistakes as the previous one, or Yoshi-P is attempting to do the concept correctly and not squander it. One thing that has my Black Mage senses tingling is that it appears that the Fire spell is going to be single target, like it was always meant to be, and not some area-of-effect hazard that almost always hit your allies more than it hit the target. If the game features a battle interface as close to the one developed for A Realm Reborn as possible, we wonвЂ™t have to worry about the quality of its battle system. ThatвЂ™s just because we donвЂ™t have any idea what the gameвЂ™s interfaces and menus look like, but then we never see those in a Yoshi-P trailer anyway.

The battle system developed for A Realm Reborn was also one of the best developed for the series in recent years.ДЄnd thatвЂ™s good because at first look, battles in Final Fantasy XVI look a lot like battles from the divisive Final Fantasy XV. Although heвЂ™s not responsible for the original focus of the game being a modern fantasy world similar to Final Fantasy XI, he retained this aesthetic in every subsequent expansion developed for the game. ItвЂ™s clear from everything heвЂ™s done for the game that he has a love of the old school franchise and is good at bringing those elements into the modern day. Yoshi-PвЂ™s success with Final Fantasy XIV has no doubt inspired the company to hope for a similar righting of the franchise in general. Battle systems are getting too complicated and the series in general is listening to the wrong kind of feedback and reacting to it Final Fantasy XVвЂs open world concept seemed to have been as a result of people hating how linear Final Fantasy XIII was, for example. One of the criticisms of the modern franchise is that itвЂ™s doing too much to innovate for innovationвЂ™s sake and not for whatвЂ™s actually right for each game. Instead, the role of director is going to be filled by Hiroshi Takai, whose credits include several old school Final Fantasy games. Presumably thatвЂ™s so that he can still direct the next installment of Final Fantasy XIV. Yoshi-P isnвЂ™t going to direct the new game, heвЂ™s a producer this time around. Even if it doesnвЂ™t ever make its way to MicrosoftвЂ™s consoles, itвЂ™ll at least find its way onto Steam eventually and give both anti-Sony fanboys and PC-exclusive users an option for playing the game. Right now, Final Fantasy XVI (that is going to take a lot of work to get used to typing, especially as IвЂ™ve typed the Roman numeral for fourteen a ton during my time playing the MMO) is scheduled to be a PlayStation 5 exclusive, but given that both Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XV were originally meant to be exclusive to the PlayStation family of consoles and both were eventually announced for their generationвЂ™s XBoxes, itвЂ™s reasonable to assume that this new Final Fantasy will not stay exclusive for long.

It turns out that fans were correct in their speculation, and for likely one very good reason: Yoshi-P not only figured out how to right the Final Fantasy XIV ship, but has turned it into one of the best Final Fantasy games of all time, with Shadowbringers telling such a classic Final Fantasy story that you half expect to hear the chiptune victory theme with every battle you win. Speculation had been rampant that this is the project that Final Fantasy XIV director Naoki Yoshida вЂ“ known among fans as Yoshi-P вЂ“ was going to be working on for the company outside of his role in charge of their second successful Final Fantasy MMO. Surprising literally everyone, especially given how the franchise has been going as of late, Final Fantasy XVI has been formally announced with a brand new trailer and logo and everything.
